Protecting the Kūaotunu Peninsula for future generations.
The threat of large-scale mining activities occurring on and beyond the Kūaotunu Peninsula has become a reality.
Large parts of Hauraki Coromandel including the Kūaotunu Peninsula have active Exploration and Mining licences attached to them - largely unknown to the local communities and landowners.
Over 17,000 hectares of OceanaGold exploration permits between Kūaotunu and Tairua!
The truth about mining
The mining companies will tell you it is a safe and sustainable industry. This isn’t correct.
Gold mining has a long history of making profits for the owners and leaving a toxic liability for communities and countries.
Tailings dams continue to be a source of global contention because of their repeated failures.
Between 2007–2017 there were 50 tailings dam failures across the globe (United Nations MINE Tailings Storage: Safety is No Accident, 2017). Since 2017 at least 18 more have been recorded (WISE 2021).
They are already here!
OceanaGold are aggressively expanding their operation at Waihi and have active exploration licences across Hauraki Coromandel including the Kūaotunu Peninsula and from Purangi to Tairua.
OceanaGold have recently been observed (August 2021) undertaking exploration activities at Purangi near Hahei and Cooks Beach.
Landowners you can prevent them coming onto your land.
Gold price at record levels
The price of gold has reached a near record high and the push for new mines in areas that are well known for precious metal resources like Hauraki Coromandel are expected to get more aggressive.
Help us to keep the Kūaotunu Peninsula mining free
We have kept them out for over 40 years
Kūaotunu has long been a bastion against the plans of overseas mining companies to ravage our beautiful home.
Since 1983 hundreds of hard working volunteers have fought to keep the Coromandel north of Waihi free of mining. We need your support more now than ever. See more about us >>
We are mobilising again to stop the current push to open up the Kūaotunu Peninsula and further south from Purangi to Tairua to mining.
Dig this, OceanGold!
In 2017 94% of the Kūaotunu community supported KAMAG's call against extractive mineral mining and tailings dams in Kūaotunu and the Coromandel. Add your voice to our chorus and join the campaign to keep our home mining free.
Help us to tell OceanaGold that they are not welcome here.
Lock the Gate on OceanaGold
Landowners have a legal right to stop mining companies onto their land to explore for gold.
We can all help by buying and displaying a Lock the Gate sign to tell them they are not wanted.
